Who/what sources do you look to for drive and inspiration?

Anything from nature, to experiencing different cultures when traveling.  I often take photos of an interesting plant, historic home fronts, stone paths, animals, intriguing artwork, the list goes on. Botanical gardens and charming older neighborhoods are filled with inspiration.

Do you have anything in your home that you’ve designed/created?

My favorite is an art installation I created from old fabric placed inside tambour frames (embroidery hoops).  I added thin rope and wood beads to hang them on the wall in my daughter’s room.

What inspired you to go into your line of work?

I have always loved math and art.  When enrolling for college I explored ways to combine the two, I explored architecture and became fascinated with interior design.

Do you have any rules or philosophies that steer you in design and/or career?

I never repeat any unique elements from a design. I feel this not only challenges myself to explore new ideas, but it also makes each project unique

What words of advice do you have for passionate interior designers early in their career?

Explore the world.  Learn about other cultures, people, systems, etc. Not only does this provide inspiration, it also makes you multi-faceted.  Design is all about looking at solutions from many perspectives.

How have you found IIDA invaluable?

I have always worked at smaller firms, so being an IIDA member opened doors to industry members, teaching me about the multi-faceted profession of interior design.  I never want to stop learning, and the camaraderie of IIDA supports that mission.
