What’s the best advice you’ve ever gotten?

I heard this quote in a podcast recently where someone said, “If you’re not uncomfortable, you’re not growing.” I find myself thinking of this quote daily; especially when I’m in a situation where I feel like I’m not equipped for my role.

What might we find on your desk right now?

A snack, water bottle, headphones, and trinkets from recent travels (the latest addition is a mini viking from Iceland).

What’s your favorite project that you’ve worked on and why?

It’s so hard to pick one! I value the experience I’ve had on all projects; I feel like I learn something new every day. Recently, I led the design on an oral surgeon’s office. I had the opportunity to work on this project from Programming to CD’s and furniture. I got to dive into the client’s desired aesthetic and necessities while considering the IBC, ADA, and FGI requirements. I learned so much about design, the project process, and forming a relationship with a new client.

What inspired you to go into your line of work?

In my childhood, I watched a tv show with my family where they designed houses for people in need. The show inspired me to draw floor plans for my toys to “live” in, and I fell in love with the idea of making spaces for people! With a ton of support from my family and friends, I chose to go to school for interior design hoping to land in the residential realm. Through my university’s program, I was able to learn so much about the commercial industry and project types, and I discovered that was what I really wanted to do!

What type/niche of design are you most passionate about?

Healthcare design is my biggest passion. I love diving into the various project types within healthcare and really thinking about how the staff and patients use their space, how the design can work for all users, and how everyone’s experience is impacted by design.

How have you found IIDA invaluable?

Being born and raised in a small town far away from Eastern Iowa, IIDA has given me the opportunity to network with other industry professionals in the area. The webinars and CEUs offered provide great knowledge and opportunities to learn and grow on a personal and professional level.
