As a hotel with a century-long legacy, Hotel Fort Des Moines has undergone significant alterations over the years, notably losing its grand two-story atrium in 1962 when the space was infilled to accommodate additional meeting rooms. However, a recent restoration project has meticulously reversed these changes, bringing back the historic grandeur to the heart of Des Moines. The owner's unwavering vision and dedication to revitalizing the 10th and Walnut streetscape drove the meticulous removal of non-original intrusions, including the second-floor infill, to recreate the grand lobby. Original marble flooring, select wood paneling, and ornate plaster rosettes are among the surviving historic elements surrounding the recreated atrium Refurbished two-story arched window frames now flood the lobby with natural light, complemented by new wood paneling that frames the volume of the atrium. New arched openings mirror the historic windows, while modern wood balustrade railings pay homage to the original design. Central to the atrium, a new balcony pope stand adds to the historic charm. A modern coffered ceiling, inspired by the historic plaster ceiling, has been meticulously recreated using scaled drawings from 1918. New chandeliers suspend where fixtures once hung, while carpeted areas overlay damaged marble floors, sourced from the original quarry where possible. A new fireplace anchors the space to the south, flanked by double wood columns framing the entrance and historic staircase to the north. A sculpture depicting two travelers now stands where a historic fountain once graced the lobby, honoring the hotel's rich history. Throughout the space, modern furniture creates flexible gathering areas, reflecting past building techniques, craftsmanship, and culture. The entire property has been curated by the design and ownership team to offer a truly unique and site-specific experience, serving as a reminder of the hotel's storied past and its enduring legacy for generations to come.
