The Foundation Offices Expansion

The client, a civic-minded philanthropic organization, needed more space in which to undertake their mission and accommodate staff. With space in the existing building at a premium, the only option was to expand into an adjoining lower level with an irregular layout. Overcoming this challenge the expansion of the Foundation Offices not only seamlessly integrates with the original project but also introduces new and innovative ways in which to achieve simple sophisticated design. The garden level, at risk of feeling dark and constrained, is cleverly transformed to feel open and connected. Floor to ceiling interior glazing, separating offices from circulation, allows for the transfer of light and views, visually connecting the entire space with vistas of the lake beyond. The communicating stair not only connects the old and new phases but is intentionally designed as a contrast to the feature stair in phase one. While the original stair is light and tectonic, hanging delicately from the atrium ceiling, phase two's stair is meant to contrast this, with a heavier and more monolithic appearance, creating a dynamic transition between phases. Functioning as the heart of the organization, its central position within the overall floor plan is intentionally located adjacent to open collaboration spaces to encourage interaction. The material palette is a continuation of the first phase and features white painted steel, white oak, and slats screens. The adaptation of these elements to the new phase showcases the team's commitment to cohesiveness. The art and furniture selections contribute vibrancy, acting as a foil to the neutral palette while creating intentional vignettes. The team played a crucial role in art placement and installation, carefully coordinating lighting and mechanical systems to ensure a harmonious integration of art and architecture. Areas for gathering and overlapping spaces give the project an inviting and welcoming feeling. The prioritization of natural light, connecting the interior with the exterior, infuses the space with a gallery-like glow. In summary, the Foundation Offices' expansion achieves a remarkable design continuity, successfully addressing challenges and introducing sophisticated details that create a vibrant and cohesive workspace.
