The design team was tasked with creating a state-of-the-art, student-focused performing arts center with flexibility for all types of performances at the new high school that celebrates the prestigious history of Gretna Public Schools performing arts competition and provides a safe space for students to engage in all aspects of production of performances. The sophisticated auditorium within the new Gretna East High School is an elevated continuation of the overall project design, focusing on connections from land to sky, interior to exterior, and most critically people to people. The interior features expansive vertical wood paneling, creating a sense of height and grandeur while enhancing acoustics. The angling of these wall fins connect to the exterior facade design and frame the proscenium opening, giving a greater sense of connection between the audience and stage. This connection is amplified by the curved staircases purposefully located on the same level as the stage to provide fluid movement through the space and enhanced accessibility. This layout enables performances to extend past the typical bounds of the stage giving the room greater flexibility and a more intimate connection between performers and the audience. Warm lighting features create a visually dynamic presence and enhance the ambiance of the space. A restrained but very intentional material palette was utilized on this project, focusing on extremely durable materials with a long life-cycle and a neutral but warm, inviting palette. A golden maple linear wood product was used as a consistent accent to highlight spatial connections. Selected for its warmth and textural connection back to the agricultural fields, it was a prominent feature throughout the auditorium used to further elevate the space. Suspended curved ceiling clouds amplify the acoustic quality for each audience member and shelter lighting rigs and other technical equipment seamlessly from the audience. Catwalks above both the stage and audience seating is a unique feature that gives the students a safe learning opportunity while exponentially expanding upon the scenic possibilities of the performances. The auditorium effectively balances form and function, offering a versatile venue for performances, concerts, and presentations while maintaining an inviting and sophisticated atmosphere. The design prioritizes acoustics, accessibility and visual impact, making it a true gem for the local community.
